Rum storage: How should Rum be stored?

Quick answer

Store rum in a cool, dark, dry place, standing upright with the cap or cork on tight. Unopened rum lasts for years. Once opened, it is generally at its best for roughly six to eight months, although it rarely spoils; the flavor mostly just fades.

How should rum be stored?

Keep the bottle somewhere cool, dark and dry, such as a pantry, cupboard or basement. Heat, light and moisture can all degrade flavor. A steady temperature matters more than an exact number.

Upright or on its side?

Upright. Rum is high in alcohol, and constant contact with a cork can break the cork down and let in air. This is the opposite of wine, which is often stored on its side. If the bottle has a cork stopper, check it now and then for crumbling.

How long does rum last?

State Typical guidance
Unopened, stored well Lasts for years
Opened, sealed tightly Best within about six to eight months, as a rule of thumb

The six to eight month figure is a rule of thumb from drinks writers, not a legal date. Many people finish bottles over a longer time without issues; check smell and taste.

Should you refrigerate or freeze rum?

You can, as rum at 40 to 46 percent alcohol will not freeze in a home freezer. But extreme cold can dull flavor, so cool room temperature is better. If you freeze it, let it sit for about an hour before sipping.

What are the common mistakes?

  • Leaving the bottle on a sunny shelf or above the stove.
  • Not closing the cap fully after pouring.
  • Storing a corked bottle on its side for months.

How can you tell it has gone off?

Rum rarely spoils. Usually the aroma and taste become weak or flat. If it tastes off, pour it out.

This is general guidance; always follow any storage instructions on the label.

People also ask

Does rum go bad?

It rarely spoils. Opened rum usually just loses flavor over time.

How long does opened rum last?

As a rule of thumb about six to eight months at best quality, if tightly sealed and stored well.

Should rum be stored upright?

Yes. The alcohol can break down a cork if the bottle lies on its side.
