What is rhum agricole?
Rhum agricole is rum made from cane juice. France’s national appellation body, INAO, says Rhum de la Martinique is exclusively a rhum agricole, meaning it is made from sugarcane juice. Most other rum is made from molasses, but we did not find that stated on the INAO page, so check each product’s label.
How is Martinique rhum agricole made and labeled?
INAO says fermented cane juice is distilled at a low strength of 65 to 75 percent, which it says helps extract distinctive aromas. The AOC covers three categories:
- Blanc (white): rested after distillation with no contact with wood.
- Elevé sous bois: aged under wood for at least 12 months.
- Vieux (old): aged under wood for at least three years and bottled in Martinique.
INAO describes the white rum as lacking a burnt-sugar aroma, with fruity, floral and vegetal notes.
Where must it come from?
Growing, harvesting, distilling and aging happen on the island of Martinique, in about thirty communes, excluding islets and rocks.
Which brands are the best?
We found no official ranking of rhum agricole brands, and INAO’s page does not name any producer, so we give no list. For a bottle, look for the AOC Martinique wording on the label, then pick by category: white for mixing, aged for sipping.
