What are the benefits of animal milk for eye health?
Milk can support eye health only in a limited way: it provides vitamin A, which the eyes need to see, plus riboflavin and other nutrients. We found no official health body that says milk, goat milk or any other animal milk prevents or treats eye disease. Eye experts point to a balanced diet, with leafy greens and other foods, and regular eye exams.

In this article
Is milk good for your eyes?
In a general way, yes, as part of a balanced diet. Milk supplies vitamin A and riboflavin (vitamin B2). In the US, most fat-free milk is fortified with vitamin A to replace what is lost when the fat is removed, and whole milk contains some naturally. The US National Institutes of Health describes vitamin A as essential for vision, as a component of the light-absorbing protein rhodopsin in the retina. However, most people in the US and Europe get enough vitamin A from a normal diet, and extra will not improve sight.
Does milk prevent cataracts, macular degeneration or dry eye?
We found no official health organization that says so. Earlier claims that milk lowers the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts or dry eye are not backed by a source we could verify. The large AREDS2 research program of the US National Eye Institute looked at specific nutrients taken as supplements (including lutein, zeaxanthin and omega-3 fats) for people already at risk of advanced AMD, not at milk. Do not use milk in place of treatment.
Does goat milk have special benefits for eyes?
Goat milk also contains vitamin A, like cow’s milk, but we found no official evidence that it is better for your eyes. It is a matter of taste, tolerance and the nutrition label. Other animal milks differ in fat and nutrient levels, so read the label.
What about lutein, zeaxanthin and omega-3?
These nutrients are often linked to eye health, but milk is not a main source of them. Better sources are dark leafy greens such as spinach and kale and egg yolks for lutein and zeaxanthin, and fish for omega-3 fats. Raw milk is not a safe way to get nutrients, because it can carry harmful bacteria.
What really helps your eyes?
- A varied diet with vegetables, fruit, fish and dairy or fortified alternatives
- Not smoking
- Regular eye exams, especially with a family history of eye disease or diabetes
- Sunglasses and rest breaks from screens
If you notice vision changes, night blindness, dry or painful eyes, see an eye doctor. This is general information, not medical advice.
