How do you store grappa and how long does it last after opening?
Store grappa upright, tightly closed, in a cool, dark place away from heat and sunlight. An unopened bottle keeps for years. After opening, grappa does not spoil in a harmful way but slowly loses aroma; quality fades gradually over months, faster in a bottle that is mostly empty. There is no official shelf-life figure.

How do you store grappa?
- Upright: spirits at 35 to 60 percent alcohol can damage a cork that touches the liquid for long, so stand the bottle up.
- Cool: a steady, cool room temperature is fine; avoid radiators and sunny windowsills.
- Dark: light fades color and aroma, especially in clear bottles.
- Closed: make sure the cork or screw cap seals tightly.
How long does grappa last after opening?
There is no official figure. Grappa is a strong distilled spirit (35 to 60 percent ABV), so it does not go bad like wine. Over time, oxygen dulls the aroma and the flavor flattens. Quality fades slowly over months, and the fuller the bottle and the tighter the seal, the better it keeps. Young, aromatic grappa shows the loss of fragrance sooner than aged grappa.
Should grappa be kept in the fridge?
Not necessary for storage. Some people chill a bottle before serving, especially young grappa. Cold storage does not harm it, but it is optional; do not keep it in a freezer if the bottle can crack.
Should you decant or move it to a smaller bottle?
If a bottle is nearly empty and you will keep it for months, pouring it into a smaller clean bottle with less air in it slows the fading. Label it.
How can you tell if grappa has gone off?
- The aroma is weak or flat and tastes watery.
- Cloudiness, floating particles or an odd smell can mean contamination or a poor seal. Do not drink it if it smells wrong.
A slight haze when very cold in some grappas is known, but if you are unsure, do not drink it.
Does grappa age in the bottle?
No. Spirits stop maturing once bottled. Aged grappa gets its color and flavor in the cask before bottling.
Safety
Keep alcohol out of reach of children, and drink in moderation.
