What makes Barbados rum different?
The signature Barbadian style is an aged blend of pot-still and column-still rum. Column-still rum is usually the bigger share. Pot stills give heavier, more flavorful spirit; column stills give lighter spirit. Blending them gives a medium-bodied rum that many describe as balanced. Barbados rum is now known for having no added flavorings, though merchants often flavored rum in the past.

Why do so many Barbados brands exist?
In the early 1900s a Barbadian law barred distilleries from selling rum in lots under 10 gallons. Distilleries therefore sold mainly to merchants, who aged, blended and bottled rum under their own names. That is why many Barbados brands are not distilleries.
