How is Swedish vodka traditionally consumed and served?
In Sweden spirits are traditionally taken as snaps: a small shot drunk during a toast, usually after a short drinking song. Nobody drinks until the song ends. Strong spirits are sold only at the state-run Systembolaget, and the legal age to buy them is 20.

What is snaps?
In Sweden, snaps (brännvin) is traditionally a shot drunk during a toast, sometimes called a nubbe, and it is accompanied by a snapsvisa.
How it is served
- In tiny shot glasses held at the table while people sing.
- As part of a toast, not as a casual drink.
- After a snapsvisa, a short drinking song. Nobody drinks until the song ends.
Etiquette for guests
- Wait for the host and the song before drinking.
- Refusing a toast without a legitimate reason, such as pregnancy or being the designated driver, is considered impolite.
- Drinking around children, or letting them taste alcohol, is frowned upon, and drinking is taboo in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
- Drinking alone is seen as a possible sign of a drinking problem.

A little history
Late in the 19th century brännvin made up about 90% of the alcohol Swedes drank. Today spirits are about 21% of sales, and wine leads at over 42%.

If you want to try the tradition, use small glasses, toast first and keep portions small. This is a general suggestion, not a rule.
