How much caffeine am I drinking? Daily limit calculator
Pick your drinks and how many you have in a day. The tool adds up the caffeine and compares it with the 400 mg a day that the FDA cites for most adults. It takes about 20 seconds.

How to use the caffeine calculator
Choose a drink in each row and set how many you have. The total at the top updates as you change it. Use “Add another drink” for up to six rows. Amounts come from the USDA for typical products, so your own cup can differ.
What the 400 mg limit means
For most adults, the FDA has cited 400 milligrams a day, which it describes as about two to three 12-fluid-ounce cups of coffee, as an amount not generally associated with negative effects. The FDA also says people differ a lot in how sensitive they are to caffeine and how fast they clear it, and that body weight, medications and some medical conditions change what “too much” is.
If you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding, the FDA recommends talking to your health care provider about whether you need to limit caffeine. Caffeine is not the same for everyone: this tool shows an amount, not advice for your body.
Typical caffeine in a 12-fluid-ounce drink (FDA)
| Drink | Typical caffeine |
|---|---|
| Caffeinated soft drink | 23 to 83 mg |
| Green tea | 37 mg |
| Black tea | 71 mg |
| Coffee, regular brewed, non-specialty | 113 to 247 mg |
| Energy drink | 41 to 246 mg |
The FDA also gives 2 to 15 mg for an 8-fluid-ounce cup of decaf coffee. “Decaf” is low in caffeine, not caffeine-free.
Children and teens
The FDA page notes that medical experts advise against energy drinks for children and teens, and that the Dietary Guidelines for Americans say drinks containing caffeine should be avoided for children younger than age 2.
Where the numbers come from
Caffeine per serving is computed from USDA FoodData Central values per 100 g and the USDA serving weight (read 2 Nov 2026): USDA FoodData Central. The 400 mg figure and the table are from the FDA: Spilling the Beans: How Much Caffeine is Too Much? (read 2 Nov 2026). Brewing, bean, cup size and brand change real amounts. Check the label of packaged drinks.
