How do pigeons feed their young with milk and what is the feeding process like?
Pigeons feed their chicks (squabs) crop milk, a thick, cheese-like secretion made in the lining of the parent's crop, a pouch in the throat. The parent opens its beak, the squab puts its bill inside and takes the milk from the parent's throat. Both parents make it, under the control of the hormone prolactin, and chicks get only crop milk for about the first week.

How do pigeons feed their young?
With crop milk. The parent produces it in the crop, a pouch in the neck normally used to store food. The squab pushes its bill into the parent’s open beak, and the parent passes the milk up from its throat. This is called regurgitation feeding, and it is normal bird behavior.
What is pigeon crop milk?
Crop milk is a semi-solid, pale yellow substance, somewhat like cottage cheese. It contains more protein and fat than cow or human milk, and unlike mammal milk it has no carbohydrates (sugars). It is made from cells that slough off the crop lining, not from mammary glands.
Who makes it?
Both the mother and the father. The hormone prolactin, which also drives lactation in mammals, triggers the crop cells to multiply. Production starts a couple of days before the eggs hatch.
How long do squabs get crop milk?
- First week or so: only crop milk.
- After that: parents add a growing share of softened adult food, and by the end of the second week squabs are mostly on adult food.
Which other birds do this?
Besides pigeons and doves, flamingos and male emperor penguins are known to make crop milk or a similar secretion.
Is crop milk a drink for people?
