How long does ayran last in the fridge?
It depends on the product, so check the carton for the use-by date and any use-within-days-of-opening instruction. Unopened refrigerated ayran lasts until its use-by date if it stays cold.
| Type | How long |
|---|---|
| Store-bought, refrigerated, unopened | Until the use-by date on the pack |
| Store-bought, refrigerated, opened | Follow the label |
| Long-life (UHT) ayran, unopened | Per the carton, sometimes at room temperature; refrigerate after opening |
| Homemade | A few days; recipe sites commonly say 2 to 3 days, a few say up to a week |
Can you leave ayran out?
Not for long. Dairy drinks should go back in the fridge after serving. As a general food safety rule, perishable food left out more than about 2 hours should be thrown away, and sooner in hot weather.
How do you tell if ayran has gone bad?
- Sour smell stronger than usual, or a rotten, yeasty or sharp chemical smell.
- Fizzing, a bulging pack or a hissing sound when you open it.
- Mold, pink or other color changes.
- Heavy, slimy or lumpy texture that does not mix with shaking.
Ayran is naturally tangy and it separates, which is normal; shake it before drinking. When in doubt, throw it out.
How should you store ayran?
- Keep it at the back of the fridge, not in the door.
- Close the cap or cover tightly and drink from a glass instead of the bottle.
- Do not return unused ayran from a glass to the bottle.
Can you freeze ayran?
We did not find a source that recommends it. Freezing generally changes the texture of dairy drinks and makes them separate.
What is ayran?
A cold yogurt drink made by mixing yogurt with water and salt, sometimes with herbs; it is common in Turkey, the Middle East and nearby regions.
