What are the health benefits of ayryan?
Ayran (ayryan) is a salted yogurt drink, so it provides protein and calcium and, if it is made with live cultures, probiotics. Its health claims are borrowed from yogurt research in general; we found no strong trials on ayran itself. The main watch-out is salt: one commercial ayran lists 600 mg of sodium per 8 fl oz.

In this article
Is ayran good for you?
Ayran is a thin, salted yogurt drink. It is nutritionally similar to other yogurt products, and is a reasonable source of protein and calcium. A nutrition article lists one commercial ayran (Merve) at about 126 calories, 10 g fat, 4 g carbohydrate and 6 g protein per 8 fl oz, with 11 percent of the daily value for calcium. Homemade ayran will differ, and it depends on the yogurt you use.
What are the possible health benefits of ayran?
- Protein and calcium: from the yogurt.
- Live cultures: as a fermented dairy drink it can contain probiotic bacteria, provided it has not been heat-treated after fermenting. Check the label if you buy it.
- Hydration: it is a cold, mostly water drink often served with meals in hot weather.
What does the research say?
The studies in the nutrition article concern probiotic milk or yogurt in general, for example on mouth bacteria, inflammation markers and respiratory infections. They are not trials on ayran. Treat the benefits as plausible but not proven for ayran itself.
What about weight loss and immunity claims?
Websites say ayran helps with weight loss, digestion or immunity, but we found no controlled evidence and no official health body making such claims. Do not use it to replace meals.
How much salt is in ayran?
Salt is part of the recipe, so sodium varies a lot: 600 mg per 8 fl oz in the commercial example, about a quarter of the daily value, while a homemade glass depends on how much you add. If you limit sodium, make it at home with less salt or choose a lower-sodium product.
Who should be careful?
- People with a milk allergy should avoid it.
- People who must limit salt, such as those with high blood pressure or kidney disease, should check the label and ask their doctor.
- It still contains lactose, so tolerance varies.
This is general information, not medical advice.
