What is a double shot of coffee?
A double shot is two shots of espresso in one drink. We found no official standard for shot size, but USDA lists espresso per fluid ounce: about 63 mg caffeine per fl oz. If a double is about 2 fl oz, that is roughly 125 mg of caffeine (our calculation), against the FDA's 400 mg a day for most adults.

What is a double shot of espresso?
It is two shots of espresso served together, often called a doppio or double espresso. We found no government or standards body that defines the exact size of a shot, so volumes vary by cafe. USDA FoodData Central lists restaurant-prepared espresso with a portion of 1 fl oz (29.6 g), which is a useful unit for estimates.
How much caffeine is in a double shot?
USDA lists 212 mg caffeine per 100 g of restaurant-prepared espresso. For 2 fl oz (59.2 g) that is about 125 mg (our calculation). Real shots differ by beans, dose and machine, so treat it as an estimate.
| Drink (USDA) | Amount | Caffeine |
|---|---|---|
| Espresso, restaurant-prepared | 1 fl oz | about 63 mg (our calculation) |
| Espresso, restaurant-prepared | 2 fl oz | about 125 mg (our calculation) |
| Brewed coffee, tap water | 8 fl oz cup (237 g) | about 95 mg (our calculation, from 40 mg per 100 g) |
So a double espresso has about as much caffeine as a cup of brewed coffee in USDA data, in a quarter of the liquid.
How many calories are in a double shot?
USDA lists 9 kcal per 100 g of espresso, so 2 fl oz is about 5 kcal before any milk or sugar (our calculation).
Is a double shot safe every day?
