Do moose produce milk?

Yes. Like all mammals, a female moose (cow) makes milk to feed her calf. It is milked only on a few specialized farms, since moose are large wild animals and give small amounts for a few months in the year. In Europe the animal is called an elk, so look for elk milk as well.

Where does moose milk come from?

Moose farming for milk is rare. Russia has a well-known moose farm near Sumarokovo in the Kostroma region (opened in 1963), where moose milk is reported to be sold to a nearby sanatorium. Sweden has a farm, the Elk House (Älgens Hus) in Bjurholm, that makes moose cheese; its milking season is reported to run from about May to September. Production is tiny, so moose milk and cheese are specialty items and are not widely available. Check before you plan a visit, as opening status can change. Moose milk is not sold in grocery chains in North America.
