What is the main difference between a V60 and a Chemex?
Both make filter coffee by pouring hot water over ground coffee in a paper filter. The V60 is a cone-shaped dripper that sits on your mug or a server. The Chemex is an hourglass glass carafe with the filter built into its neck, so it is both brewer and serving pot. Its thick paper filter removes more oils, which is why it tastes cleaner.

Brew times come from retailer guides, not lab tests. Grind size, dose and water temperature change the time more than the brewer does.
Which should you choose?
- V60: best on a budget, for one or two cups, or if you like more body. Plastic models are hard to break.
- Chemex: best for serving several people, for a very clean cup and as a kitchen piece. Expect higher filter cost and more careful handling.
Which is easier to use?
Neither is clearly easier. In our general experience, the V60 gives you more control over pour speed, which can also make results vary, and a grind that is too fine can slow either brewer.
What else do you need?
- A gooseneck kettle makes pouring easier.
- A kitchen scale helps you repeat a recipe.
- Rinse the paper filter with hot water before brewing to remove paper taste and warm the brewer.
