What is the cost of producing purified water?
There is no single cost. One published modelling study of a large reverse osmosis desalination plant estimated about $0.69 per cubic meter (1,000 liters) for Caspian Sea water and $1.24 for Oman Sea water; the Caspian water was less salty. Costs vary with feed water, plant size, energy price and what is included.

What is the cost of producing purified water?
It depends heavily on the source water, the process and the size of the plant. As one real example, a published 2021 modelling study of a conceptual 200,000 cubic meter per day reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant estimated the final product price at $0.69 per cubic meter with Caspian Sea feed and $1.24 per cubic meter with Oman Sea feed. A cubic meter is 1,000 liters, so that is roughly $0.00069 to $0.00124 per liter. These are modelled estimates under the paper’s assumptions (such as a 20-year plant life, 8 percent discount rate and 90 percent load factor), not market prices, and they are for seawater, not tap water.
What makes the cost go up or down?
In the study, the Caspian case had lower-salinity feed water and a lower cost. The study lists these cost items:
- Intake and pretreatment: the largest single cost in both cases.
- RO membrane capital cost: the next largest item.
- Pump energy: by our reading of its tables, only about 7 to 9 percent of the total cost in this model.
Is tap water cheaper?
Treating freshwater from a river or well is usually simpler than desalination, so it is generally cheaper, but costs differ by utility and we did not open a source with a figure. Your local water bill is the best guide.
Why does bottled purified water cost so much more?
The retail price covers bottling, packaging, transport, storage, marketing and profit, not just purification. The processing itself is a small part of what you pay.
What about home purifiers?
Home RO and distillation units have a purchase price, filter or membrane replacements, power use and, for RO, wastewater. Prices vary widely, and we do not quote them without a source.
For a project estimate, ask suppliers for a quote based on your water analysis.

How much does it cost to desalinate a cubic meter of water?
One modelling study estimated $0.69 (Caspian Sea) to $1.24 (Oman Sea) per cubic meter at a large RO plant. Real costs vary.
What is the biggest cost in purified water?
In that study, intake and pretreatment was the largest single cost item, followed by RO membrane capital cost.
Why is bottled purified water expensive?
Because the price includes packaging, transport and marketing, not just treatment.
