Are there any risks or concerns associated with consuming black rhinoceros milk?

Quick answer

Black rhinoceros milk is not a food product, and there is no safe or legal way to buy it. The animal is critically endangered, with about 3,140 mature individuals left in the wild, so milk marketed as 'rhino milk' should be treated as fake or fraudulent. Claims of health benefits have no support.

Is black rhino milk something you can drink?

No. We found no regulated, legal or tested supply of rhinoceros milk anywhere. Rhino calves nurse from their mothers in the wild or in protected care. If you see a product labelled rhino milk, treat it as a scam or a mislabelled substitute.

Why the species matters

According to the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance fact sheet (citing a 2020 assessment), the black rhino is Critically Endangered, with approximately 3,140 mature individuals in the wild. The page cites a 98 percent decline since 1960, due to large-scale poaching, at the 1995 low point, and lists the species in CITES Appendix I, the strictest trade protection. Taking milk from a wild or protected rhino would be stressful for the animal and could affect the calf, so there is no ethical supply either.

Risks of drinking an unknown animal milk

  • Infection: raw milk from any animal can carry bacteria; commercial dairy milk is pasteurized and tested, which unregulated milk is not.
  • Allergy and intolerance: milk proteins and lactose can cause reactions, and you cannot know what is in a product with no label or testing.
  • Fraud: a product sold under a rare animal’s name is likely to be something else, with no ingredient list or safety checks.
  • Legal risk: trade in rhino products is restricted under the CITES listing and in many countries.

Do health claims hold up?

We found no study showing that rhino milk improves immunity, digestion or any other health outcome. For rhino horn, the same fact sheet says any improvement in health is due to the placebo effect, and that few scientific studies exist. The same caution applies to claims about other rhino products.

What to drink instead

If you want an unusual but safe dairy milk, goat, sheep, camel and buffalo milk are sold commercially in many places. Choose pasteurized products with a label, and ask a doctor or dietitian about any health goal.

Is black rhino milk sold anywhere?

No regulated, legal supply exists that we could find. Treat any product sold under that name as suspect.

How many black rhinos are left?

Approximately 3,140 mature individuals in the wild according to the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance fact sheet, which lists the species as Critically Endangered (2020).

Does rhino milk have health benefits?

We found no evidence for any benefit. Claims online are unsupported.
