How is black rhinoceros milk being used in research or medicine?

Is rhino milk used in medicine?
No. We found no medical product or treatment made from rhinoceros milk, and it is not a food for people. Its real use is in animal care and research: knowing what the milk contains helps zoos and conservation centers feed calves that cannot nurse.
What did researchers find in black rhino milk?
The main reference is a 1961 paper by Gregory, Rowlands, Thompson and Kon in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London. They analyzed milk from a captive African black rhinoceros during mid-to-late lactation. According to the summary on the Rhino Resource Center, the milk had only a trace of fat, less protein and calcium than cow milk, and more lactose. Soluble proteins separated into at least five components. Several vitamins (ascorbic acid, pantothenate, B12) were similar to cow milk, while thiamine was higher and nicotinic acid, biotin, riboflavin and B6 were lower.

Why does this matter?
- Orphaned calves cannot be fed ordinary cow milk without adjustments, because the sugar, fat and protein balance is different.
- Data on milk composition lets veterinarians and nutritionists mix formulas that are closer to what the calf would normally get.
- A later Smithsonian study compared milk from white, black and Indian rhinos and found statistical differences in sugar, protein, calcium and phosphorus, though the authors said it is unclear whether they matter biologically.
What is not known?
Studies use very few animals, and composition changes through lactation, so numbers from one sample should not be treated as an average for all black rhinos. Different publications report different sugar levels, so be careful with single figures.
