How do you make nitro cold brew?

Nitro cold brew is cold brew coffee infused with nitrogen gas, which gives it a smooth, foamy texture. You first make cold brew, then add the nitrogen.

Step 1: Make the cold brew

  1. Use a ratio of 1 cup coarsely ground coffee to 5 cups room-temperature water.
  2. Put the grounds in a filter bag (or a filter tied with string) inside a jug.
  3. Pour the water slowly over the grounds.
  4. Refrigerate for 12 to 24 hours. Darker roasts need less time.
  5. Remove and discard the filter.

Step 2: Add the nitrogen

One home method described by a coffee site uses a cream whipper loaded with a nitrogen cartridge: place the tip in the cold brew and release the gas. Equipment varies, so follow your device’s manual. Nitrogen (N2) is what nitro coffee uses; many whipped cream chargers contain nitrous oxide, which is a different gas, so do not swap gases unless the maker of your equipment says it is made for that use. Pressurized devices can be dangerous if misused.

Style How
Plain Poured into a tall glass with no ice, to see the foam
Iced Over ice; the foam settles faster
Sweet and creamy A little sugar, simple syrup or cream stirred in after pouring

The coffee site suggests drinking it plain for the full experience, with ice, sugar and cream as options.

Using a nitro press or keg

Devices sold as nitro presses and kegs each come with their own gas and instructions; follow the maker’s recipe for those, since we have not tested them.

Tips

  • Use fresh, coarsely ground coffee for a clean cold brew.
  • Keep cold brew refrigerated.

Caffeine levels depend on the beans and the ratio, so check with your doctor if you limit caffeine.

People also ask

What is the ratio for cold brew?

One cup of coarsely ground coffee to 5 cups of water, steeped 12 to 24 hours in the fridge, per one coffee site's recipe.

Can I use a whipped cream charger for nitro coffee?

Only if your device's maker says so. Many chargers hold nitrous oxide, not nitrogen.

Should nitro cold brew have ice?

It is your choice. Plain pours show the foam; ice makes it settle faster.
