How much does pig milk cost?
There is no standard price, because pig milk is not sold commercially. As of the article we read, pig milk and pig cheese were not available in the UK. The only price we found is for a one-off cheese: a Dutch farm reportedly sold pig-milk cheese for 1,500 pounds per kilo, and the report suggested the labor involved made it unlikely to repeat. So any claim that pig milk is cheaper or dearer than goat or sheep milk has no market behind it.
Why is pig milk not sold?
- Hard to collect: sows have up to 14 small teats and release milk for only about 15 seconds at a time, compared with over ten minutes for a cow.
- Temperament: lactating sows are not docile like dairy cows, which makes handling harder.
- No equipment: with little demand, no pig milking machine has been developed.
- Low yield: the source gives about 6 liters a day for a sow against 20 to 45 liters for a dairy cow, depending on breed.
What does pig milk contain?
The same article puts the butterfat at about 8.5 percent. The Dutch cheese was described as chalky and slightly salty. These are single-source figures, so treat them as indicative.
What milk is cheapest?
Cow milk is generally the cheapest and most widely available. Goat and sheep milk usually cost more, and buffalo or donkey milk are specialty products. Prices vary by country, store and year, so check your own shop rather than rely on a number from us.
Is it safe to drink?
Do not drink milk collected from farm animals outside a regulated supply. The FDA says raw milk from any animal can carry harmful germs such as Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria, and recommends pasteurized products.
